Professional indemnity insurance protects against claims for alleged negligence or breach of duty arising from an act, error or omission in the performance of professional services.
Not sure if you need PI? If you provide any type of product, service and/or advice to your client, and you work in the private sector, you may be liable for costs if a lawsuit is brought against you.
Public Liability insurance protects your business if a client or member of the public is injured or sustains property damage because of your alleged negligent business activities.
Example: Sophie walks into your practice and slips on her way to the reception desk as a result of the floor not being wiped down properly. There were no signs to alert clients that the floor was slippery. Sophie sustains a broken arm and a damaged mobile phone. She files a lawsuit to recover $100,000 in costs associated with her medical bills, phone and loss of income.
Professional Indemnity insurance protects you against claims for alleged negligence, or breach of duty arising from an act, error or omission in the performance of your professional services.
Example: John is a Registered Nurse, who received notice that a complaint had been lodged with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), regarding a cosmetic injecting service he had provided. The AHPRA complaint resulted in an investigation being ordered by AHPRA, and John was required to provide a formal response. His HPI policy responded by covering the inquiry costs in relation to the investigation. This included the engagement of external counsel to formally respond to AHPRA.
Receiving a complaint or making a claim can be stressful, which is why we have claims specialists on hand to assist you through the process.
It’s important to advise us as soon as you become aware of any claims or circumstances relating to your services. You can do this via email, to claims@medisure.com.au or by phone on 07 3184 5300.
